What the license covers
The C-10 classification covers placing, installing, erecting and connecting electrical wires, fixtures, appliances, apparatus, raceways, conduits, solar photovoltaic cells, and any part that generates, transmits, transforms or utilizes electrical energy in any form for light, heat, power or communication.

C-10 is one of the busiest classifications in California. Panel upgrades, EV chargers, and solar have all pushed demand up, and electrical is a trade where working unlicensed carries real exposure — both from CSLB and from your own liability.
CSLB requirements
Four years of journeyman-level experience in electrical work, verified by someone who can attest to it. Apprenticeship, technical training and certain degrees can substitute for up to three of those years.
You'll also need a valid Social Security number or ITIN to file the application.
The CSLB Law & Business exam, plus the C-10 trade exam. Both are taken at a CSLB testing center.
Live Scan is required for every applicant and qualifier. Prior convictions don't automatically disqualify you, but they must be disclosed.
Filed with the CSLB before your license is issued. You pay an annual premium to a surety, not the full bond amount.
As of 2026 nearly all licensees must carry workers' comp coverage, including many contractors who previously qualified for the no-employee exemption.

Yes. Solar photovoltaic installation falls within the C-10 scope. A C-46 Solar license also covers solar but is limited to solar energy systems, while C-10 covers all electrical work including solar.
Yes, if the job exceeds $1,000 in labor and materials. Level 2 charger installation is electrical work requiring a permit and a licensed C-10 or B contractor.
No, and this confuses a lot of people. The state electrician certification through the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement certifies you as a worker. The C-10 license from CSLB lets you contract for the work and run the business. They are separate credentials.
Yes. Adding a classification means passing the C-10 trade exam and documenting four years of journeyman-level electrical experience. You do not retake Law and Business.
