What the license covers

What a C-9 contractor
is licensed to do

The C-9 classification covers installing gypsum wallboard and the related accessories — including taping, texturing, patching, and the metal or wood framing members that support the board where that framing is incidental to the drywall work.

Work you can bid with a C-9

Who hires a C-9 contractor

General contractors, restoration companies, tenant improvement contractors, and homeowners.

Why this license is worth holding

Drywall is volume work with steady demand from GCs. Restoration in particular runs constantly and pays on insurance timelines rather than homeowner budgets.

CSLB requirements

What California requires
for a C-9 license

Four years of experience

Four years of journeyman-level experience in drywall work, verified by someone who can attest to it. Apprenticeship, technical training and certain degrees can substitute for up to three of those years.

Be 18 or older

You'll also need a valid Social Security number or ITIN to file the application.

Pass two exams

The CSLB Law & Business exam, plus the C-9 trade exam. Both are taken at a CSLB testing center.

Fingerprinting

Live Scan is required for every applicant and qualifier. Prior convictions don't automatically disqualify you, but they must be disclosed.

$25,000 contractor bond

Filed with the CSLB before your license is issued. You pay an annual premium to a surety, not the full bond amount.

Workers' compensation

As of 2026 nearly all licensees must carry workers' comp coverage, including many contractors who previously qualified for the no-employee exemption.

Once you're licensed

Straight answers

C-9 license
questions, answered

Does C-9 cover metal stud framing?

Framing members that support the wallboard and are incidental to the drywall work are within scope. Structural framing is C-5.

Is texture and finish included?

Yes. Taping, texturing and finishing are part of the C-9 scope.

Does C-9 cover insulation?

No. Insulation is C-2, though many drywall contractors carry both because the work sequences together.

How long does it take to get licensed?

Most students are licensed in about three months. The timeline depends on how quickly you finish the course, when you schedule your exams, and current CSLB processing times.

Do you handle the application paperwork?

Yes. We complete and file everything — the application, experience verification, bond and insurance documentation. Incomplete applications are the number one cause of delay, so we check every line before it's submitted.

¿Ofrecen las clases en español?

Sí. Todo nuestro equipo es bilingüe. Las clases, la ayuda con la aplicación y todas las actualizaciones están disponibles en español.
